Mark ANthony's
(2019) TRT 3 min
"When business flounders, a restauranteur makes the most of a chance encounter with a dangerous customer."
Directed and Animated by Paul Gleason (solo project).
Made at the UCLA Animation Workshop.
Using Blender, After Effects, Photoshop, and clay.
About the film: As my second animated short at UCLA, Mark Anthony's was primarily an exploration of form. Initially conceived as a stop motion animation, the animated style evolved into — oxymoronically — a computer generated claymation.
The hybrid aesthetic combines traditional clay sculpting, photogrammetry (photoscanning), and computer generated animation. The result is a tactile quality with the scalable flexibility that CG animation affords.
After nearly a year to the day to complete, "Mark Anthony's" finally screened at UCLA Film & Television Film Festival, where it won the Most Innovative Award.
Below I've included a step-by-step mini-tutorial on how I built the interchangeable armatures.
